Pressurised cylinders were introduced to the UK market as long ago as the 1980s. They are often referred to as unvented cylinders and are proving to be highly popular. Their popularity is evident both in the domestic market and the professional space with plumbing and heating engineers. In 2007 unvented systems accounted for around 50% of the installed systems for the first time.

Unvented systems provide good pressure of hot water at home. They differ substantially from traditional systems in that they do not rely on a header tank. Traditional systems build the hot water pressure by having a feeder tank in the loft which builds the water head and creates the pressure for the system. However, there is typically not enough head room for the water to build up sufficient pressure resulting in, for example, low pressure in the shower (especially if it is on the top floor).

Unvented systems are sealed and thus have an internal pressure which is likely to increase as the water within the tank heats up. In traditional systems, expansion of water as it heats up is handled by the feeder tank, which easily accepts any such expansion. For unvented systems, the solutions come in the form of specially designed checks and safety equipment to ensure safe and reliable operations even as water heats up and expands.

The UK certification of unvented systems has strict requirements from manufacturers to ensure that proper safety measures are in place to handle the excess expansion in the system when the water heats up. Expansion vessels are attached to the loop (either externally or within the cylinder) to absorb volume expansion of up to ten bars. This level is normally enough to account for most cases of volume increase due to overheating of the water.

Legally certified unvented cylinders must meet the UK standard for safety measures to ensure that pressure build up within the sealed system does not pose a problem. The systems therefore rely on a combination of technical solutions. An expansion vessel is normally attached (externally or sometimes internally within the cylinder) to absorb expansion in the volume of the water due the heating. These vessels can handle up to around ten bars of pressure, addressing major expansion in the system.

Another safety measure is the temperature and pressure relief valve. The PT valve is a simple yet smart mechanical valve which senses whether the temperature or the pressure within the cylinder is too high (or is breaching a preset level). At that point the valve opens up to let the extra steam out into the drain, thus immediately reducing the temperature, the pressure and the volume of water in the system.

The safety checks and valves ensure a safe and reliable hot water system. The Cold water enters the system at mains pressure, keeping the system (which is sealed) at a constant pressure throughout. The water heats up within the cylinder and is then delivered to the user (still at mains pressure). As the hot water is drawn to the user (normally from the top of the cylinder), fresh cold water enters the cylinder (normally from the bottom) to replenish the levels and sustain the pressure.

Unvented cylinders normally fall into one of two main categories - direct and indirect:

* Direct cylinders - typically using an electrical immersion heater to heat the water. In this arrangement the electrical unit is immersed in the water within the cylinder and is hence heating the water directly. Typical heating units come with a capacity of 2.5 to 3.6kW.

* In-direct cylinders - these cylinders use a heat exchanger format to transfer the heat from another heat source. Typically a gas boiler heats up water which is then run through the heat exchanger inside the cylinder. Heat from the boiler-heated water is then used to heat the water inside the cylinder in-directly through the heat exchanger.

Since their introduction, unvented cylinders have grown in their market share and their popularity. With competition in the market improving availability and reducing prices, it is fair to assume that unvented tanks have a bright future.

There are countless breathtaking landscapes. Just visit a local or national park, you won’t even have to leave the United States! Below are tips to help you take awesome landscape photographs. Both beginners and professionals can use these simple tips to take landscape photos.

1. Be cognizant of light quality. Figure out whether the lighting is soft or harsh. Is the light bright, or are you photographing at sunrise of sunset? What is the weather like- is it overcast or cloudy? Typically you will want to avoid mid-day light and photograph before 10 a.m. and after 2 p.m.

2. Look for interesting lighting. Back-lighting and side-lighting are great for mountains. Side-lighting can be created by turning 90 away from the sun. Back-lighting is very dramatic and creates silhouettes.

3. Compose your photograph. For landscapes, symmetry works. Remember, simplicity is beautiful. Do you have lakes, streams, trees, or mountains? Look at the different shapes formed by the landscape in your frame.

4. Try to include bridges, paths, and roads. Use their shapes to draw the viewer in and lead them around the photo. If you photograph them at an angle, you are able to create that effect. Place the start of a road or path in the corner of the photo.

The vast majority of reverse osmosis reviews are positive, and in some cases there are glowing comments about the ability of RO units to clean up brackish well water, or water with very high iron or sulfate content. And I would also praise RO systems’ ability to clean up such water. But most of us don’t have brackish water that needs this very expensive and cumbersome technology. Bad tasting and/or bad smelling water is common in a lot of the US. Sometimes the brackish water, or the water with high mineral content, is just undrinkable. That same water can be cleaned up with a RO system to be very drinkable, but I have always found such water to be very stale or flat tasting.

The weird taste is a small thing, but it is a symptom of something larger. The flatness comes from the fact that the RO process removes ALL the minerals from the water, including trace minerals such as calcium and potassium our bodies need to maintain good health. Also, this demineralization makes the water slightly acidic and, if consumed, this water will try to return to a neutral pH by leaching calcium from bones or teeth. If you use a RO system, you may want to consider adding mineral supplements to your diet.

Not to belabor the point, but health officials have proven that when body fluids become more acid than alkaline there is an increased production of free radicals, thus increasing the risk of cancer.

The RO filter consists of a semi-permeable membrane that filters out any matter larger than a water molecule. This is done by forcing the water through the membrane and sometimes, if there is not adequate water pressure, a booster pump may be needed.

The pores of the membranes are so small that even with sufficient pressure much of the water cannot be forced thru the RO membrane and is simply flushed. This adds to the operating costs.

The vast majority of our drinking water is “sanitized” with chlorine, a poison, and chlorine will not be removed by a RO system because the molecules are even smaller than water’s and will pass thruogh the screen. The same is true of the thousands of synthetic organic chemicals found in our water supplies. To have these compounds removed a carbon filter must be used in combination with any RO system.

Water passing through a filter of any sort will somewhat reduce the water pressure and this is certainly true of the RO systems. They are very slow and, if you want filtered water for say, bathing, you will need a storage tank capable of maintaining water pressure.

The ‘Rube Goldberg’ combination of filters, pressurized storage tank, booster pump (maybe), and so forth, leave a lot of things to fail in these systems, and, indeed, it leads to the areas of highest complaints in reverse osmosis reviews… maintenance issues, operation costs and start-up costs.

If your drinking water comes from a water utility company, or from a chlorinated well, not plagued with brackish water, I would strongly urge you to compare the RO system to a selective filtration system. They are also referred to as multi-stage systems.

These systems use a chemically charged resin which is blended with carbon and extruded into a solid block form. This combination produces an amazingly effective filter technology. In simple English, the bad water flows into the filter system from one end, using normal water pressure, and the carbon removes the bad taste, bad smells, chemicals and drugs. Then the resin, through an ion exchange process, filters out the heavy metals such as lead and mercury, but leaves the healthy minerals like calcium and potassium. After that, you get good, healthy water flowing from the other end of the system.

Kiss the extra pumps, pressurized tanks, extra maintenance and operating costs, and, even the need for calcium tablets good bye. If connected right these systems work almost maintenance free, giving you the best tasting, healthiest water you could ask for.

Photoshop CS4 is a Photoshop 64-bit version of photo-editing software; however it is only for Windows and not for the Mac OS X platform. Adobe is not attempting to play favorites, instead it’s trying to respect the changes Apple made in 2007 to their programming. Since the creation of XP Windows has been supporting 64-bit version of software, but it has been moving quiet slowly as most software and hardware support 32-bit.

You might be wondering what you can expect from the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS4. If you are looking for increased speed, and not additional effects or interface improvements, the typical user will not notice much change. You will notice that there are some minor performance enhancements based on Adobe’s preliminary testing of about 10%. 10% is based on what the average user uses Photoshop CS4 for, such as opening a 10meg RAW picture and doing basic image manipulation. However, if you are opening a large 3.2 gigapixel image and then editing it, you will notice that Photoshop 64 will outperform its 32-bit counterpart 10 times over. Unfortunately not too many of us do that! To be honest, I don’t desire to lead you to believe that Photoshop CS4 isn’t worth it. You can make the choice yourself, but really, is it worth it? In this article I want to focus on what Photoshop CS4 has to offer in the 64-bit version in comparison to the 32-bit version and the affect it will have on you.

One of the things that Photoshop is known for is creating one picture from multiple images, whether it is a panorama or a multi-layered image. Everyone who uses this program understands that it asks a lot from your computer. If you want to boost your speed but don’t want to run the 64-bit version, you should consider increasing your memory. By minimum standards, with the 32-bit version, you should think about running with no less that 4 gig’s of RAM. Most HDR, panoramic or multi-layer images will run smoother given the extra increase in memory. Additionally, this increases Photoshop’s ability to track your history of changes.

If you go the 64-bit route one other area that you need to take note of is that your plugins will have to be 64-bit as well. You cannot mix 32-bit and 64-bit processes. Moreover, you might also need to purchase Vista as XP will not be supported.

Bottom line here is that Photoshop CS4 has brought about some very interesting upgrades from the CS3 version, however, if you are considering purchasing the 64-bit version, make sure you are dealing with many gigapixels and/or with extremely complex High-Res images.

These cameras aren’t much bigger than the compact digital cameras, but they offer a lot more user control. The lenses might be bigger, heavier, and of higher optical quality. Almost all creative compact cameras offer the option of storing images in RAW format, usually proprietary but sometimes in Adobe’s standard DNG format.

Many people find that the standard JPEG format is convenient for uploading images to the Web, sharing with friends, or getting prints. Unfortunately you will usually find that a lot of shadow and highlight detail that was captured by the sensor can be lost with a standard JPEG due to compression.

Using the RAW format, the photographer has the opportunity to bring out that shadow or highlight detail in images by using a graphics editing program (or letting a professional lab do it and make a really great print).

Unless you are prepared to spend an evening reading the manual and learning the settings I don’t recommend you buy one of these cameras. Otherwise your results will be the same as if you had used a simpler compact camera.

Panasonic LX2 (28-110mm F2.8-4.9 image-stabilized Leica lens; good for wide angle). Canon G7. 35-210mm F2.8-4.8 lens; no RAW capability; very bad noise at high ISO Ricoh GR Digital. This has a fixed focal-length 28mm equivalent lens that will be superb for wide-angle scenic photos. It is not clear if this camera is going to be sold in the United States.

The sad thing is that creative compact cameras appears to have gone out of favor and you may have difficulties finding one on the market. Camera companies are concentrating their energies on the “SLR-like” category and SLR category

It’s always fun to take photographs of sunrises and sunsets, although it can be tricky at times. What follows are some tips to help you get the shot you want.

1. Take time and plan ahead. While you can spontaneously take sunset or sunrise pictures, planning is usually a good idea. There may be a particular location, park, ocean, or mountain range that you want to visit. The best part about sunrises and sunsets is that they are always changing, and shots minutes apart can be vastly different. Take time to watch the changing light and clouds.

2. Stay out late, or wake up early. The sun does not necessarily have to be in a sunrise or sunset photo. You can either stay out after the sun has set, or get up early before the sun rises. Because the sun is so bright, the contrast with the morning or evening sky can be drastic, and it will be easier when the sun is not in the frame.

3. Try bracketing. When you bracket, you end up with three identical shots with slightly different exposures. Expose for a shot, and then take two subsequent shots- one underexposed by 1 stop, and one overexposed by 1 stop. For example, your first shot could be at F8, and then F5.6, and F11.

4. Look for silhouettes. Silhouettes are created when you have a properly exposed background, and the objects in the foreground are dark. To achieve this, find an area of the sky to set a good exposure, and then compose your photograph.

5. It’s a good idea to carry a tripod with you. If the lighting is low and you desire a long exposure, you will be well prepared.

6. Experiment with different settings. To get warm tones in your photo, try shooting sunrises and sunsets using the “cloud” or “shade” setting, as apposed to auto white balance.

Remember to have fun photographing sunrises and sunsets. Also, use the unique light to photograph the landscape around you. To get more in focus, you can use F16 or F22.

Macro photography is when you photograph your subject close-up. Macro photography allows you to get in close and photograph small details on your subject. Usually macro lenses are 1:1 (”life size”). That means the size of your subject in the frame is generally the same size in real life. Here you will find macro photography tips.

1. The first thing you have to think about is equipment. You can use a close-up lens, attach a close-up filter to the lens you are already using, use a bellows attachment, or a telephoto extender. If you are just starting out, you may just want to invest in the macro filter.

2. In macro photography, it is important to know that the depth of field is different. Choose a high f-stop number such as an F16 or F22 (small aperture). Most of what is in the background will not be in focus.

3. Be careful when focusing your subject, because if you are not, the part you want to be in focus will end up blurry. Except under bright lighting conditions, you will probably use a slow shutter speed.

4. Lighting your subject is critical and must be taken into consideration. Since your camera will be very close to your subject, keep in mind that you must have light between the lens and your subject. It may be worthwhile to invest in a ring flash.

5. You will be using slow shutter speeds, but film speed can play a factor in shutter speed. Generally you want to stay at ISO200 or lower.

6. Experiment with a number of different subjects. Play with shape and texture. Do not forget about composition, and color in your background.

You may want to use a tripod, use a diffuser, or experiment with light balance. It’s important to take your time, but always have fun. Bugs and flowers are great subjects.
